Mobile Internet is a phrase that means to access to the world wide web from a handheld mobile device, such as a mobile phone, tablet, laptop or any other portable device capable of connecting to a mobile network or other wireless network.

Conventionally, access to the internet has been via wired services that need a dedicated phone line, using cumbersome laptops or desktops with giant CRT monitors.  With the recent boom in smart-phones, roll out of unlimited data packages by mobile networks & lighter laptops with dongles – people using  these latest,  more portable ‘mobile internet’ devices are probably going to outnumber those surfing the net from normal computers.

Mobile internet isn’t really the same as wifi.  While the vast Majority of handheld devices can utilise wifi,  mobile internet uses technology such as, EDGE, 2g, 3g, HSDPA, GPRS and next generation 4G.
